3 Innovative Ways To Make Growing Organic Microgreens Easy

14/05/2017

Indoor gardens are a great way to improve sustainability and healthy eating at home, and with the innovative products we’re highlighting in our blog today you can create a complete circle, from growing through to consumption and composting.

There are many positives for growing microgreens and herbs at home, not only do you have access to fresh, healthy produce, packed with flavour and nutrition whenever you need it, you can also be sure that the greens you grow are organic, free of pesticides and non-GMO. Indoor gardens can improve your air quality by filtering toxins from air that become trapped indoors, lowering the risk of respiratory disorders while also providing the sense of well being that plants and the natural world can bring to a home. Once you have produced your delicious greens, herbs or sprouts juicing is a fantastic way to consume them to maximise the health benefits. Composting the waste from peelings, offcuts and the root bases can then take your greens full circle, to be used as compost in your houseplants.

Keeping an indoor garden may seem daunting in Hong Kong where space is at a premium but there are some great new innovative products that can revolutionise your diet without taking over your kitchen. We’ve been particularly impressed with the indoor gardens listed below and wanted to share them with our healthy, eco-conscious readers!

1. Growing microgreens, healthy and organic vegetables and herbs couldn’t be simpler with an automated kitchen garden from Urban Cultivator. This also looks fantastic as an interior design feature in your home if you have the space.

2. Get into producing Raw Food at home with a Bio Set Sprouter. Organic and GMO free sprouts are easy to grow and provide dense nutrition and energy sources. This system allows you to grow your produce in stages so that you always have a fresh supply. In a humid climate ensure there is access to ventilation, a water spray is enough to hydrate the plants.

3. This organic water garden is a self cleaning fish tank that grows organic sprouts and herbs, the fish feed the plants and the plants clean the water, a food producing eco-system in the heart of your home! Not only is it a decorative, compact way to grow herbs it can also inspire children to understand eco-systems and sustainability. Ensure that there is a light source close by Mini Aquaponics Ecosystem.

There is of course a more traditional method of growing herbs and salads at home, utilising a plant pot, soil, a windowsill and watering. This is still a great option for adding fresh herbs and leaves to your cooking or for supplementing a fresh green salad with your organic homegrown produce.
