Concept

Casa de las Floros, House of Flowers, draws inspiration from Rowena’s Filipino heritage and French-Canadian upbringing. The village house has many Spanish architectural features, including the white stucco exterior, terracotta roof tiles, arched windows, wrought iron doors, balcony railings and an internal staircase. Calling upon her upbringing in French-Canadian Montreal, the Spanish character of the house resonated with Rowena. Her motherly role also enlightened the design concept, embracing her daughter’s request for pink flowers. At the same time, her Filipino heritage is represented by the choice of diction “Floros”, a play on words of her Filipino family name “Floro”. All together, the deeply personal and sentimental inspirations for Casa de las Floros is a representation of Rowena’s commitment to designing homes that reflect the heritage, connections and memories of its inhabitants.

Health & Sustainable Features

Casa de las Floros is home to a family of four, a couple and two young children. During the renovation process, the Spanish character of its architecture was retained as much as possible. In doing so, the charm of the house was preserved and renovation costs were kept minimal. From the dining table, a view of the front garden blossoming with roses, trees and pomegranates gives glimpses of nature from the inside. An open layout brimming with nature’s touch helps relax the mind and improve overall well-being by reducing stress through connecting with nature. Keeping to an open-space concept, the exhaust hood design and blear back wall with lighting in the kitchen makes it much more spacious. Herbs on the windowsill provide fresh herbs for healthy cooking, while a food recycler turns food waste into fertiliser for nourishing the herbs and other plants in Rowena’s garden.
