How To Make A Heavenly Eco-Friendly Hotel Bed At Home

21/11/2019

If you’ve ever stayed at a really good hotel you’ll know the satisfaction of sleeping in a bed that’s been created so perfectly for your comfort. When a hotel bed is done right it can be really amazing!

Inspired to create this level of comfort at home we have some suggestions for how you can improve your comfort and sleep quality. After all, we spend around a third of our lives  in bed so it makes sense to make it as comfortable as possible. Not to mention that bed can often be a space for relaxing, reading and meditation so it needs to have a really enveloping, comfy, relaxing vibe.

If you’re sleeping surrounded by natural and hypoallergenic materials they can have a big impact on improving your sleep quality, in turn, improving your overall physical and mental wellbeing.

Mattresses

Mattresses are a very personal choice! You may enjoy a very soft or very firm mattress or anything in between that gives you the support you need to avoid back pain and other physical ailments. However, a big consideration is also what materials go into your mattress.

One of the main things is that you need to make sure your mattress is non-toxic so that there are is no off-gassing of nasty chemicals into your room, your lungs and into your skin while you sleep.

Unfortunately most standard mattresses contain many toxic chemicals. The ones to particularly look out for are polyurethane foam, synthetic latex; formaldehyde and toxic flame-retardants like PDBE, HFR’s, phthalates and vinyl. Harmful compounds in mattresses can cause lung and skin irritation and have been linked to other health problems.

Using a mattress that’s made from natural and organic materials is a much safer option for your health and is kinder to the environment. Materials that tend to be used in healthier, natural mattresses are cotton, wool and natural latex. Look out for the GOTS, GOLS and Greenguard standards that all relate to the organic status of the materials used within the mattress.

Hypoallergenic mattress covers can protect mattresses and are also easily removed to wash and remove mites and dead skin that can build up on your bed over time. If you’re investing in your bed then this is a great addition to ensure longevity of your mattress.

Toppers

The top hotels create the sumptuous bed experience by adding a topper layer above the mattress to supplement the comfort of your mattress. This can create a softness that doesn’t detract from the firmness of the mattress beneath.

A topper made from a natural option such as wool, natural latex or ethically harvested down is the ideal as they allow the mattress and your body to breathe and regulate your temperature much better than a synthetic alternative.

Duvets & Pillows

We would recommend that you avoid man-made synthetic duvets and pillows and opt for natural alternatives, especially if you have chemical sensitivities. Natural materials are breathable and will keep you cool on warm nights and warm when it gets a little colder for a really comfortable nights sleep. You may also wish to invest in two weights of duvet so you’re able to change them with the seasons.

Hotels usually give at least two pillows for each person to create different options for sleeping and lounging. Some hotels use up to four but remember if you don’t need them they may end up on the floor more than the bed!

As with mattresses and toppers you should be looking for organic, non-toxic, sustainable and fairly traded options for your pillows and duvets. There are many options out there with a little searching!

Goose down that is hospitality quality from a cruelty free source will give you a sleep only equalled in the best hotels! They are luxurious, light and comfortable.

Wool is mould, mildew and fire resistant and will wick moistures away from your face and body. It’s warm and cozy and drapes well around you.

Natural latex is naturally hypoallergenic and resists dust mites.

Silk duvets and pillows are another great lightweight, premium option as they are naturally anti-allergy, as dust mites don’t like silk. It also regulates body temperature, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Buckwheat and Kapok pillows are also great eco options.

Bedding, Sheets & Covers

Last year we covered the process of choosing the perfect natural and healthy sheets and bedding in more detail in this blog post.

Following on from that and to complete your gorgeous hotel bed experience here are some more inspiring natural and organic bedding choices in different sizes that ship to Hong Kong for your new hotel quality bed.

Of course, making sure your little ones have the best sleep experience too is very important so here are some lovely eco items from Malabar Baby!

Cushions & Accessories

If you’d like to add decorative cushions and accessories to your bed follow the same rules as above on sourcing natural products that have been made ethically and environmentally. Remember that there’s no point purchasing eco-friendly soft furnishings if the item is then padded with a synthetic fill or wadding.

By investing in eco and healthy products for your bed, not only will you be creating a luxury, hotel feel in your own home but also buying items that will have more purpose and longevity.
